Bjork!

Declare your independence! Declare your independence! Raise up the flag. Higher, higher ...
That's what we heard as we got showered with confetti in the last song of the Bjork concert in Seoul last night. For an anniversary president, I got tickets for Patty. We got standing room only seats right in front of the stage, probably about 14 rows back. Fantastic. Bjork was in full crazy form, jumping around the stage in front of a 10-piece brass band from Iceland, wearing flags on their head and triangles on the forehead. It was a lot of fun, probably one of my top five concerts ever. There were only about 5,000 people there. My ears are still ringing.

The other top four:
Steve Ray Vaughn's last concert ever (w/ Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy in Alpine Valley, Wisconsin). He died in a helicopter crash an hour or two after the show.
Kermit Ruffins in a New Orleans dive jazz bar.
Buckwheat Zydeco in Milwaukee Summerfest.
Midnight Oil in New York. It was a special unpublicized show, and I was standing only about 5 rows from the front in just a small room, not much bigger than a bar.

Honorable mention:
Run DMC/Beastie Boys in Rockford in the early 1980s. One of my first concerts.
Bruce Springsteen in Giants Stadium
Rolling Stones at Alpine Valley near Milwaukee.

I think you're forgetting a Matthew Sweet concert where some jokester yelled out "I'm only having 87 percent fun!"

Hey Brian! It's Mark McGowan!

The AHS Class of 1988 reunion steering committee meeting (it's me, Bonnie Martin and Kerstin Ferguson) need to start getting some hard numbers on attendance so we can determine ticket costs. Please know that we are committed to keeping the price as low as possible.

Here are the basic details ...

The class reunion takes place Saturday, Aug. 16, and Sunday, Aug. 17.

The Saturday evening event is starts an adults-only dinner with cocktail hour first and dancing to '80s music later, all at the University Club, 945 N. Main St. (just north of the Whitman Street bridge). Please let Bonnie know soon if you can attend or if you think you can attend.

(We also need your mailing address so we can send you an invitation. Please send that info to ahs.1988@hotmail.com.)

The Sunday afternoon event is a family picnic and potluck at Dahlquist Park, located behind Temple Baptist Church a block or so southwest of the corner of East State Street and Fairview Boulevard. Bring your kids!

Bonnie has started a MySpace page for us ... http://www.myspace.com/rockfordahs1988 ... so you can keep up with the news online and maybe reconnect with some of your friends before the reunion.

Finally, please forward this to any of our classmates with whom you're still in touch. Bonnie, Kerstin and I really want to see as many people as possible this August!

Thanks,

Mark
